Zimbabwe and South Africa – Safari, culture and great African landscapes

A comprehensive overland itinerary traversing Zimbabwe and South Africa, combining iconic natural wonders, historic sites of global significance and some of the best safaris in;Southern Africa.
The trip takes place in minivans or 12-seater buses, accompanied by qualified English-speaking staff, and is ideal for dynamic travellers who want to experience Africa in an authentic and engaging way.

The tour begins in Victoria Falls and ends in Johannesburg, passing through Hwange, Matopos, Great Zimbabwe, Mapungubwe and the Kruger National Park.

Travel schedule

Day 1 – Victoria Falls → Hwange National Park

Morning departure from Victoria Falls in the direction of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe's largest protected area.

In the afternoon first game drive safari in open 4x4 vehicles, discovering elephants, lions, buffalo and antelopes.

Settlement
Miombo Safari Camp – permanent double tent with private bathroom.
Meal included: dinner.


Day 2 – Hwange National Park and Painted Dog Centre

Morning wake-up and dawn safari in the park.

Return to camp in the middle of the day and, in the afternoon, visit the Painted Dog Conservation Centre, a project dedicated to the protection of the African wild dog.

Settlement
Miombo Safari Camp.
Meals included: breakfast and dinner.


Day 3 – Hwange National Park → Matopos National Park

After breakfast, depart for the Matopos National Park, characterised by spectacular granite formations and deep spiritual value.

In the afternoon safari in the park, with the possibility of rhino sightings.

Settlement
Banff Lodge – double room with private bathroom.
Meals included: breakfast and dinner.


Day 4 – Matopos → Great Zimbabwe Ruins

Transfer to Great Zimbabwe, the former centre of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Guided tour of the impressive stone ruins, a symbol of the country's history and identity.

Day 5 – Great Zimbabwe → Mapesu Private Game Reserve

Travel southwards in Zimbabwe to the Mapesu Private Game Reserve, in the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area.

Arrive in the afternoon and have time to relax surrounded by nature.

Settlement
Mapesu Wilderness Camp – permanent tent with private bathroom.
Meals included: breakfast and dinner.


Day 6 – Mapungubwe area and wildlife tracking

In the morning, visit to the Kaoxa Rock Art Shelter, with ancient San rock paintings.

In the afternoon guided tracking experience in the private reserve, to learn to read animal tracks and understand the local ecosystem.

Settlement
Mapesu Wilderness Camp.
Meals included: breakfast and dinner.


Day 7 – Mapesu → Phalaborwa (Kruger Area)

Crossing the border with South Africa and entering the northern area of the Kruger National Park.

Late afternoon sunset safari in a private reserve near Phalaborwa Gate.

Day 8 – Phalaborwa → Timbavati Area

In the morning guided bush walk in the Phalaborwa ’area.

Onward journey to the Timbavati region, part of the Greater Kruger.

In the afternoon sunset safaris in open 4x4 vehicles.

Timbavati Safari Lodge – double room with private bathroom.
Meals included: breakfast and dinner.


Day 9 – Panorama Route → Hazyview

Panorama Day along the famous Panorama Route, with stops at:

  • God’s Window

  • Bourke’s Luck Potholes

  • Three Rondavels and Blyde River Canyon

Umbhaba Eco Lodge or Nkambeni Reserve or Sanbonani Hotel Resort (subject to availability).

Day 10 – Kruger National Park

A full day dedicated to a full day safari in the Kruger National Park in open 4x4 vehicles.

Return to the lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 11 – Kruger Area → Johannesburg

After breakfast, transfer to Johannesburg, where the tour ends in the late afternoon.
