Western Madagascar is home to some of the country’s best-known and most spectacular landscapes: the Avenue of the Baobabs, the Kirindy Forest and the rocky labyrinth of the Tsingy de Bemaraha.
It is a remote region, accessible via dirt tracks, river crossings and long off-road journeys. It is not the easiest route in Madagascar, but it is one of the most rewarding for those who love adventure, photography and extraordinary natural environments.
Morondava is the main gateway to western Madagascar.
The town overlooks the Mozambique Channel and serves as a base for visiting the Avenue des Baobabs, Kirindy and the track to Bekopaka.
Connections to Antananarivo and other regions must be checked carefully, as the operating schedules of domestic flights are subject to change. Where necessary, we allow for adequate time before the return international flight.
The Avenue des Baobabs is one of the most photographed places in Madagascar.
Towering specimens of Adansonia grandidieri line a dirt track, creating a particularly evocative landscape at sunset and sunrise.
The area is not a fenced-off park, but a territory inhabited by local communities. Carts, villagers and everyday activities are all part of the landscape.
During your visit, it is important to respect the crops, the people and the surrounding areas.
The Kirindy Reserve protects a dry tropical forest inhabited by lemurs, reptiles, birds and other endemic species.
It is one of the best-known places for spotting the fossa, Madagascar’s main natural predator. A sighting cannot be guaranteed, as it is a wild animal and is mainly active at specific times.
Daytime and night-time excursions allow you to search for different species, accompanied by the reserve’s guides.
The journey to Bekopaka is an integral part of the experience.
The route mainly follows unpaved tracks and includes river crossings by local ferries. Journey times depend on road conditions, traffic and the operational status of the river crossings.
4x4 vehicles are required, and a flexible itinerary is essential. The region is not suitable for those seeking short transfers or standardised hotel accommodation.
The Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is a unique environment, comprising a vast expanse of limestone pinnacles, canyons, caves and forests.
The area is recognised by UNESCO and protects numerous endemic animal and plant species.
Tours of the Grand Tsingy may include:
The experience is spectacular, but requires a reasonable level of mobility and is not suitable for those who suffer severely from vertigo or have mobility difficulties.
For those who prefer a less demanding activity, the Petit Tsingy or other routes may be considered, subject to conditions in the park.
When included in the itinerary, a boat trip on the Manambolo River offers views of gorges, rock faces, vegetation and natural caves.
The excursion takes place on local boats and provides an interesting complement to the overland tour of the Tsingy.
Operational status, water levels and navigation arrangements are checked locally.
A visit to western Madagascar should be planned for the dry season, generally between May and October.
During the rainy season, tracks may deteriorate or become impassable, and some services may suspend operations. The opening dates for the Tsingy tours depend on actual conditions on the ground.
It is therefore one of the regions where choosing the right time of year is particularly important.
To visit Morondava, Kirindy, Bekopaka and the Tsingy, you should allow at least a week, not including any extensions.
A 14–16-day trip allows you to combine the west with the RN7 and southern Madagascar. Trying to shorten the stops too much makes the itinerary prone to delays and very tiring.
The itinerary is particularly suitable for:
We do not recommend this as the first choice for those seeking primarily relaxation, constant comfort or a trip with very young children.
Western Madagascar can be combined with the highlands, Ranomafana, Anja, Isalo and the southern coast.
Discover our 15-day tour of the West and South, featuring the Tsingy, Avenue des Baobabs, the RN7, nature reserves and a final stay by the sea.
The complexity of the West makes it essential to coordinate vehicles, drivers, guides, ferries, accommodation and flights.
We organise complete tours only and do not arrange individual stays, excursions or transfers.
Unless expressly stated otherwise, quotes exclude international flights. Any necessary domestic flights are included and quoted as part of the package.
