SHISHANGENI PRIVATE RESERVE - Shonga Tented Camp & Camp Shawn
Where is it located: the “concession areas” are extensions of the Kruger park that the Kruger administration has given to private companies who have organised in-house accommodation facilities.

These are areas that are for all intents and purposes part of the Kruger, adjacent to it, and there is no fenced boundary with the public part of the park, so the animals move around freely.

This private reserve is located at the most remote south-eastern end of the park, in close proximity to Komatipoort and Mozambique, not far from the Crocodile Bridge Gate, the southern gateway to the Kruger Park.

The Shishangeni Reserve covers more than 150 square kilometres and is home to three lovely lodges, the main one è Shishangeni Lodge itself but there are also two tiny, 5-star settlements, even more remote: one è the Tent Camp Shonga and the other è Camp Shawu.
The Shishangeni Lodge is located in the heart of the Kruger Park, in the northern part of the country, close to Kompoort and Mozambique, and just a short drive from the Crocodile Bridge Gate, the southern gateway to the Kruger Park.

Shonga Tented Camp è simply a marvel. Astonishingly, the accommodation is absolutely in the middle of nowhere in the savannah and the most intricate forest, the absolute peace that one can enjoy pampered by 5-star comfort, sleeping in spacious and luxurious tented structures that are built on wooden stilts and have thatched roofs.

Of course, there is also a swimming pool, a restaurant and a library: all these common areas are set on a wooden “bridge” so that you can enjoy the savannah below, seeing it as you would see the sea from the deck of a cruise ship. This structure accommodates a maximum of 10 people and this might be enough to make its exclusivity clear.
Shawu Camp è a camp located next to a lake, in the greenest and flattest part of the reserve; it has only 5 bungalows and also offers an exclusive service; very spacious rooms, an excellent restaurant and observation areas complete the facilities.

Each room has a sleeping area, lounge, open-air elevated deck with a view, fireplace, en suite bathroom with open shower, refrigerator.
The tented rooms at Camp Shonga are a true masterpiece: elevated on wooden stilts, with walls like Canadian tents but a ceiling of beams and thatch, they combine the merits of sleeping in a tent (contact with nature, with the wind, with noise) and the merits of a hotel suite.
The rooms are also equipped with a living room, a lounge, an open-air open-air shower room and a bathroom with an open shower.
Each tent has a large open area with sun loungers and parasols and is connected to the restaurant and other tents by pontoons, all of which are elevated. The equipment of the tents includes a sleeping area, a living area, a splendid bathroom with an old-style bathtub, plus an open-air shower and a fireplace.
Each tent exceeds 40 square metres.
The 5 bungalows at Shawu Camp are very spacious and luxurious, with living and sleeping areas as befitting a suite, plus each guest has a private veranda overlooking the forest and lake.

These 3 facilities, which are equivalent in terms of their very high standard, are ideal for those who want to stay in the Kruger park without wanting to “compromise”.
While the few well-equipped public camps within the park are relatively sacrificial facilities, Shishangeni offers a standard of service and tranquillity that is unmatched.
Staying at Shishangeni, all the park's typical activities, such as photo safaris, night safaris and bird watching, can be undertaken under the guidance of competent rangers: the special status of the private areas makes them practically inaccessible to other tourists, so that lodge guests can enter the savannah safe in the knowledge that they have it all to themselves.
