Cape Town & Surroundings (malaria-free)

• Boulders Beach, Table Mountain (cable car), Kirstenbosch (garden with walkway “Boomslang”), Two Oceans Aquarium, Atlantic beaches and False Bay. Balene at Hermanus (May to November)

• Iciconic experience; with young children we prefer adjacent private resorts with shorter game drives, gated lodges and pools. We always consider seasonality and pace.

Malaria: What to know (plain and simple)

• ~90% of South Africa è malaria-free.The areas most visited by families (Cape Town, Garden Route, Addo, Pilanesberg, Madikwe) do not require prophylaxis.

• Kruger & Lowveld: not malaria-free but with generally low incidence, especially in austral winter (June–August).

• Good practice: light-coloured clothing with long sleeves at sunset, mosquito nets, effective local repellents (e.g. Tabard).

• Note: For prophylaxis and personal assessment, always talk to your paediatrician.

1) Family Cape & Garden – 10 days / 9 nights (malaria-free)

Cape Town (4N) → Hermanus/Overberg (1N) → Garden Route Knysna/Plett (3N) → Addo or Private Reserve (1N)

• Penguins, Table Mountain, Two Oceans Aquarium, Cape Point.

• Whale watching (in season), protected beaches, Tsitsikamma (boardwalks), bird sanctuary.

• Short safari to Addo or in family-friendly private reserve (game drive 2–3 hours).

2) Big Five without malaria – 7 days / 6 nights

Johannesburg (1N) → Pilanesberg NP or Madikwe GR (3N) → Johannesburg (1N) &rarrr; Cape Town Extension (2–4N)

• Game drives sunrise/sunset, junior rangers, gated lodges, swimming pools, family rooms.

3) Kruger “smart” – 7 days / 6 nights (depending on season)

Johannesburg (1N) → Private Reserve Greater Kruger (4N) → Johannesburg (1N)

Practical advice for parents

• Rhythm: alternate activities (max 2–3 hours) with free moments; insert 2 nights minimum per stop.

• Season: summer (Nov–Tue) →sea/lagoon; winter (May–set) →safari top, dry climate.

    FAQ 

    • From what age do you recommend safari?  From 4–5 years upwards in private malaria-free reserves with short game drives; under 4 years old we favour Cape Town + Garden Route.
    • .
      • Can you do the Kruger with young children?  Yes, but with smart approach (fenced lodges, short drives, dry season). Alternatively, Pilanesberg/Madikwe (malaria-free) are often the best choice.
      • Better summer or winter?  Austral winter (mag–set): safari top, dry climate. Summer (Nov–Tue): sea, whales (Jul–set in Hermanus), warmer in the middle hours.
      • Does prophylaxis need to be taken? It depends on the itinerary: most of our Family è malaria-free tours. For personal assessment, please consult the pediatrician.
