eSwatini – The Kingdom of Authentic Africa: Safaris, Nature and Traditions

eSwatini, known until 2018 as Swaziland, is one of Africa’s smallest countries, but also one of the most fascinating and authentic. Situated between South Africa and Mozambique, it is the perfect stop for those wishing to enrich their journey with a cultural and natural experience off the beaten track.

With its mountains, nature reserves, traditional villages and a culture still deeply rooted in ancient traditions,eSwatini offers a side of Africa that few travellers have the chance to discover.

Thanks to its strategic location, it is often included in our itineraries between the Kruger National Park and KwaZulu-Natal, or as an extension into Mozambique.

With South African Dream, we organise bespoke itineraries that include eSwatini, whether on a self-drive or with a private guide speaking Italian or English, allowing you to experience the country at your own pace and avoid simply passing through.

Why visit eSwatini

eSwatini is a destination quite different from the rest of South Africa.

Here, life moves at a slower pace, allowing you to experience a culture that remains deeply rooted in its traditions.

It is the ideal choice for those who wish to:

  • discover one of the last kingdoms ofAfrica
  • enjoy authentic cultural experiences
  • visit uncrowded nature reserves
  • spot rhinos and other African wildlife
  • travelling through spectacular mountain landscapes
  • visit craft markets
  • add a unique stopover between Kruger and KwaZulu-Natal

What to see in eSwatini:

Hlane Royal National Park: TheHlane Royal National Park is the largest protected area in eSwatini and is the ideal destination for those wishing to experience a safari in a setting that is still relatively unspoilt.

During safaris, you can spot:

  • white rhinos
  • elephants
  • lions
  • giraffes
  • antelopes
  • numerous species of birds

Safaris are led by expert guides who accompany visitors on a journey of discovery through the local wildlife.

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary: The Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the country’s most picturesque reserves. Here, a safari takes on a completely different character.

You can explore the reserve:

  • on foot
  • by bike
  • on horseback (in some areas)
  • on guided safaris

The absence of large predators in some areas allows you to enjoy avery relaxing experience, surrounded by nature.

Mantenga Cultural Village: To truly understand Swazi culture, we recommend a visit to the Mantenga Cultural Village.

This traditional village offers an insight into:

  • local customs
  • traditional dwellings
  • music
  • dances
  • crafts
  • History of the Kingdom of eSwatini

It is one of the most fascinating cultural experiences in Southern Africa.

Ngwenya Glass: Among the country’s finest examples of craftsmanship, Ngwenya Glass, a historic workshop that creates stunning objects from recycled glass. During the visit, you can watch the artisans at work and purchase unique, handmade products.

Sibebe Rock: Nature lovers can visit the spectacular Sibebe Rock, one of the world’s largest granite monoliths. The area offers scenic trails ideal for hiking and photography.

Safaris and nature

eSwatini should not be regarded as an alternative to Kruger National Park.

The two destinations complement each other perfectly.

After a few days on safari in Kruger, eSwatini offers the chance to slow down the pace of your trip and discover a more tranquil natural environment and a culture that remains authentic.

It is precisely this combination that makes the trip so complete.
