Easy combos with Western Cape (Cape Town & West Coast), Namibia, Botswana.
.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (Kalahari) - Desert park shared with Botswana: red dunes, arid savannah, vast skies. Famous for black-haired lions, cheetahs, oryx and birds of prey. Dirt tracks, excellent photographic sightings, nights under starry skies. Game drives along the beds of the dry Nossob and Auob rivers. Main camps: Twee Rivieren, Nossob, Mata-Mata; wilderness camps for experts
.
Augrabies Falls National Park - The Gariep/Orange River plunges into granite gorges creating the Augrabies Falls. Scenic trails, viewpoints and fiery sunsets.
Namaqualand & West Coast (blooms) - Between late August and September, winter rains transform arid steppes into a carpet of wild flowers (daisies, vygies). Loop routes between Namaqua National Park, Skilpad, Kamieskroon, Springbok.
.
Richtersveld Transfrontier Park (with Namibia) - Mountainous desert region bordering Namibia, spectacular geology and quiver trees. 4x4 trails, wild camping along the Orange River; regulated access.
.
Kimberley & The Big Hole- Historic diamond capital: the Big Hole and museum village tell the story of the diamond rush. Interesting cultural stop with good facilities.
.
Sutherland & the Astronomical Karoo - At high altitude and under some of the darkest skies in the southern hemisphere stands the SALT (Southern African Large Telescope). A perfect destination for astrophotography and frosty but clear nights in winter.
.
Namaqua Coast (Hondeklip Bay, Port Nolloth, Alexander Bay) - Remote coastline, sandy slopes and wrecks, seal colonies and birdwatching. Permits required for some protected stretches (Richtersveld Coastal).
.
Kgalagadi/Richtersveld: May–September for bearable heat, wildlife visibility and clear skies; very hot summers.
Namaqualand – blooms: end of August–midà September (variable depending on rainfall and temperatures).
Augrabies & Orange River: year-round, best light in autumn/austral winter.
Sutherland: winter for clear skies (cold nights), spring/autumn for milder weather.
We recommend dates/areas according to interests (photography, 4x4, hiking, astrophotos, flowering) and level of experience driving on dirt roads.
Upington (1n) → Kgalagadi (3n) → Augrabies (2n) → Upington (1n). Plus: desert safari + granite gorges in a compact arc.
.
Cape Town (1n) → Namaqua NP (2–3n) → Augrabies (2n) → Kgalagadi (3n) → return via Upington/CPT.
Variants: coastal detours (Hondeklip Bay) or return along the West Coast.
Cape Town (1n) → Richtersveld (3–4n, 4x4) → Orange River (2n) → Augrabies (2n) → Kgalagadi (3–4n).
Extensions: Southern Namibia (Fish River Canyon) or Botswana (Central Kalahari).
Self-drive 2WD possible for part of the itinerary; 4x4 recommended for Kgalagadi (sandy tracks) and obligatory in Richtersveld.
.
Flights: to Upington (UTN) or Kimberley (KIM) via Johannesburg; alternative to Cape Town by road route.
Car hire: SUV/4x4 recommended; full tank and water supply on desert routes; tyre pressure reduction on sand (if 4x4).
Accommodation: SANParks camps, wilderness camps, desert lodges, guesthouses in base towns (Upington, Springbok, Kimberley, Sutherland).
Permits: Richtersveld and some coasts require permits/booking in advance; we assist with the practice.
Climate: severe temperature fluctuations; bring technical layers, hat, sunscreen, head gear.
Useful notes
Malaria: the Northern Cape è malaria-free.
Borders: cross-border sections (Kgalagadi on the Botswana side/Richtersveld on the Namibian side) require vehicle documents and customs controls; we handle these at the project stage.
