Discover Rwanda: An African Gem Rich in Nature and History

An Overview of Rwanda

Rwanda, often associated with its tragic past, is today a nation undergoing rapid modernisation and development, with a strong commitment to the conservation of its stunning national parks. Situated in the Great Lakes region of Central Africa, Rwanda borders Uganda, Congo, Tanzania and Burundi, and shares the magnificent mountain gorilla reserve with these countries.

Parc des Volcans: The Heart of Conservation

Parc des Volcans, part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area which spans three countries, is the focal point for tourism in Rwanda. This park is not only famous for having been the base camp of zoologist Dian Fossey, but is also a sanctuary for the rare mountain gorillas.

  • Volcanoes: The park is home to five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga range, including Karisimbi and Bisoke.
  • Flora and Fauna: The rich biodiversity includes rainforest, bamboo, mountain gorillas, golden guenons and 178 species of birds.
  • Dian Fossey: The park is historically significant for the work of Dian Fossey, who fought against poaching and contributed to gorilla conservation.

Nyungwe Forest: A Sanctuary of Biodiversity

The Nyungwe Forest is one of Africa’s oldest and best-preserved ecosystems. Covering 1,019 km², this rainforest is a paradise for wildlife and nature lovers.

  • Biodiversity: It is home to 75 species of mammals, over 322 species of birds and 140 species of orchids.
  • Primates: It is home to 13 species of primates, including 500 chimpanzees and various species of guenons and galagos.
  • Excursions and Activities: Ideal for birdwatching, trekking and chimpanzee watching.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

  • Climate: Despite its equatorial location, Rwanda’s altitude provides a temperate climate with an average temperature of 20 °C.
  • Rainy Seasons: March–May and October–December are the wettest periods, ideal for seeing the forest at its most lush.

Conservation and Community Impact

A significant proportion of tourism revenue is reinvested in the conservation of natural habitats and in supporting local communities. This effort not only helps to preserve Rwanda’s rich natural heritage but also improves the quality of life for rural communities.
